Stopping Your Puppy’s Barking
Dogs bark for many different reasons. Older dogs may bark because of disturbances in the night, because of people passing, or because they see another dog or animal. However, young puppies typically bark for attention. At Dances with Wolves Ranch we stop a young puppy’s habit of barking by simply not give them attention while they’re barking. This means that you’ll need to ignore your White Swiss Shepherd puppy’s barking until they stop.
Giving them no attention during bad behavior means don’t give any treats, don’t pet, don’t hug, don’t talk to them, and don’t even look at them. Once they are finally quiet you can reward them with attention. Even if they’re just quiet for a moment because they’re taking a breath, that’s the moment when you give a treat, or you encourage them. Otherwise you ignore them completely while they’re continuing the bad behavior of barking.
Barking During Crate Training
One example of when puppies bark is when you are starting to crate train them. The same training method applies in this case. When you put your Dances with Wolves Ranch puppy in the crate and they start barking, you turn away from them and ignore them. As soon as they stop barking for any reason you can turn back around and give them a treat. At first you start by rewarding them for just a second or two of quiet and then once you’re farther along in training you wait for longer periods of silence to give them a reward. Never take them out of the crate while they’re barking.
If your Dances with Wolves Ranch puppy is barking at something specifically then the best way to curb that behavior is to desensitize them to whatever it is they’re barking at. For example, if they bark at the doorbell, practice ringing the doorbell over and over so they’re used to the sound. Reward them for any period of silence during practice times. The same thing applies if they tend to bark at people coming in and out. Practice with people coming in and out of the house and reward them when they are silent. This training could take days or weeks to see results but will only work with consistency. You can’t give them attention while barking sometimes and not other times.

How to Stop Your puppy From Jumping on People
One of the most common problems people face when they get a new puppy from Dances with Wolves Ranch is dealing with him jumping up on people. All puppies will jump up to try and get attention and each time they is not corrected, you are reinforcing that bad behavior.
In order to correct this habit, you need to give your Dances with Wolves Ranch puppy attention only when he’s doing what you ask. When your puppy jumps up do not reward him. Petting, hugging, giving a treat, talking to him, or even looking at him are all forms of rewards.
Instead of rewarding that bad behavior, whenever your puppy jumps up on you step forward into them and say “off” sternly. Gently push them down with a soft knee and don’t give them positive attention until they have calmed and don’t look like they’re attempting to jump again. If he looks like he’s going to jump up, you can even turn and face the opposite way.
Whatever you do, make sure that you are not praising your puppy as he’s jumping up on you. At Dances with Wolves Ranch we wait until the puppy stands calmly, sits, or lies down to pet him or give a treat. In order for this training to work it has to be consistent. The more you allow the puppy to jump up without correction, the worse the behavior will get, and it may be impossible to correct once he’s older.
Correction with Guests Over
It’s important to correct your White Swiss Shepherd puppy even when guests are over. A good way to keep him under control with the excitement of many people over is to keep him on a leash or put him in a crate when they arrive. Once the situation is calmer you can bring the your Dances with Wolves Ranch puppy out, so he learns the behavior of staying calm and not jumping up on people.
In the first few tries your puppy may not catch on. It may take weeks to see the results. The key is consistency and not giving up. If you refuse to give your puppy attention when he’s disobeying, your puppy will eventually learn that good behavior is rewarded and he will become a calm, well-trained dog.

Exercising Your Puppy
Your young White Swiss Shepherd puppy will have a lot of energy and he will need fun, safe activities to exercise his mind and body. A bored pup can easily turn to mischievous behaviors such as chewing or digging. While they’re still learning the rules of the house, you want to make sure they have enough exercise and mental stimulation to keep them healthy and build their confidence. Fun Exercise Ideas for Your Puppy
Fun ideas to exercise both the puppy’s mind and body are games like hide-and-go-seek where they need to either find you or some hidden treat. Tug-of-war can help teach your White Swiss Shepherd puppy self-confidence (unless puppy shows signs of dominance) and what things are okay to chew and where/when it’s okay to be high-energy. Exercising your puppy is the perfect time to begin to train him. For example, games like fetch could be a good opportunity to teach the command “drop it.”
When you are coming up with exercises for your White Swiss Shepherd puppy, keep in mind that their bones are still growing and are fragile, so avoid rough activities such as high jumps, running on pavement or for long periods of time. Play time for young pups should be gentle and supervised to make sure they’re staying safe.
Your White Swiss Shepherd puppy will need a workout every day, but the length depends on how active the breed is, and how old the puppy is. Puppies have short attention spans, so at Dances with Wolves Ranch instead of doing one long session of playing or exercise we do two daily sessions of around 10 to 20 minutes. If your White Swiss Shepherd is showing a lot of resistance to going into the water, he should not be forced if he’s afraid. Especially for young dogs, if they have one bad experience with water, they might be afraid of it for the rest of their lives.Therefore, it’s important to make sure that your White Swiss Shepherd’s first experiences with water are positive and fun.
Positive Experiences in Water
When first introducing your White Swiss Shepherd puppy to the water, make sure that he’s comfortable and feels safe. Bring along treats to feed him every step that he takes into the water. Talk enthusiastically and encourage him the whole the way. Stand in front of your puppy and back up so he’s stepping closer and closer to you until he’s swimming to get to you. At Dances with Wolves Ranch we start young puppies in a kiddie pool to get them used to the idea of water. We start with just an inch or two and slowly fill it up higher.
Encouraging Your Puppy to Get in the Water
If your White Swiss Shepherd likes toys or a ball, you can throw them into the water slightly ahead of him, so he’ll swim to reach his toy or ball. At Dances with Wolves Ranch we bring along another dog that already knows how and likes to swim, and the puppy follows them in. If your family is in the pool together splashing and having fun, your puppy will be more likely to try getting into the water to join in on the fun.
Teaching your puppy to swim is a process. Instead of spending hours in one day trying to get him to enjoy the water, spread it out in small sessions over a few days or weeks.
