The story of Dances with Wolves Ranch is, at its core, a story about bloodlines.
Before DWWR puppies existed, before our ranch, before our Puppy Academy, before nearly 20 years of placements, there were years of international travel, research, and relationship-building with the best breeders in the world. This is the foundation on which everything else was built.
Why Bloodlines Matter
A puppy is not simply the product of its two parents. It is the expression of many generations of genetics, health histories, temperament patterns, structural traits, work drive, and cognitive capacity, shaped over decades of selective breeding.
When I evaluate a potential breeding dog, I am not looking at one animal. I am evaluating the entire line behind that animal: the health records of parents and grandparents, the show and working results of siblings, the temperament patterns across the pedigree.
This requires access, relationships, and expertise. With a biology and genetics degree from UCLA, a multilingual European background, and connections built over nearly 20 years, I have been uniquely positioned to build relationships with the top breeders in Europe and to evaluate what they offer with genuine scientific rigor.
World Champions and Working Title Holders in Our Lines
All of the European lines I have chosen to import and build our program around are descendants of the most accomplished dogs in the breed’s history. Specifically:
At least 10 ancestors across our lines have earned the title of #1 Dog in the World for the White Swiss Shepherd in FCI conformation, the highest competitive title available in the international show world. These titles are awarded at the FCI World Dog Show, where dogs are evaluated by international breed experts against the highest standards.
Dogs in our lines hold Schutzhund 3 (SchH3) and IPO 3 titles, among the most demanding titles in the world of protection sports. These titleholders are in the ancestry of dogs I have acquired and integrated into our breeding program.
Where Our Dogs Come From
DWWR dogs have come from the most distinguished breeding programs across Europe. Our bloodlines and current breeding dogs include dogs from:
Czech Republic: long a center of elite working dog development
France: home to some of the most structurally correct BBS show dogs
Germany: original home of the shepherd family, with rigorous working and health standards
Croatia: producing exceptional dogs with outstanding temperament
Sweden: Scandinavian lines known for longevity and health
Russia and Ukraine: producing some of the most striking and capable BBS in the world
Argentina: where the breed has seen remarkable recent development in working and show capacity
Spain and Poland: additional lineages that have contributed to our program’s diversity
This international diversity is deliberate. Outcrossing to unrelated lines reduces the concentration of any single genetic weakness while combining the best traits of each program.
Registration and Accountability
Every dog in our program is registered with either the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale, the international registry of the European Kennel Club) or the UKC (United Kennel Club in the United States). Pedigrees are not publicly posted on our website but are available to clients upon request.
DWWR is a member and listed breeder with the American White Shepherd Association (AWSA) and the United White Shepherd Club, the two primary White Swiss Shepherd / White Shepherd breed clubs in the United States. These memberships reflect accountability to established breed standards and ethics.
In the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) conformation competition, DWWR has earned Best in Show and twice Reserve Best in Show, an objective evaluation of our dogs’ structural quality and temperament by independent breed experts. In UKC, DWWR dogs have won numerous Best in Group and Best of Breed titles.
The First Breeding Program in the United States
Dances with Wolves Ranch established the first White Swiss Shepherd breeding program in the United States. We were breeding these dogs before any of the US-based WSS clubs were formed, and we have been developing the breed in America ever since.
This history matters because it means our program has more cumulative knowledge, more breeding data, and more documented outcomes than any other BBS program in the country.
Frozen Semen and Genetic Diversity
Occasionally, when the right stud dog is available but geography makes a natural pairing impossible, we work with frozen semen from top European stud dogs to introduce exceptional new genetics into our program. This is a standard tool in elite breeding programs worldwide, used to preserve exceptional genetics and expand diversity without compromising on quality. We also maintain our own personal sperm bank in Pasadena, California, to breed retrospectively back to dogs that have proven exceptional longevity, health, and temperament.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does bloodline really matter when choosing a dog?
Yes, significantly. Bloodline is the best predictor of the health, temperament, and structural traits that will be expressed in your dog. A puppy with well-documented, multi-generational health and temperament records is a fundamentally different investment than one with an unknown background.
What does it mean for a dog to have World Champion bloodlines?
FCI World Champion titles are awarded at the annual World Dog Show, the most prestigious conformation event in the world. Dogs that earn these titles have been evaluated by international breed experts against the highest standards. DWWR lines include at least 10 such World Champion-titled ancestors.
What are IPO 3 and SchH3 titles?
IPO 3 (International Protection Dog Examination Level 3) and Schutzhund 3 (SchH3) are the highest levels in protection sport competition: testing obedience, tracking, and protection work to an extremely demanding standard. Dogs that earn these titles represent the highest expression of working ability in the shepherd family. These titles appear in the ancestral lines of DWWR breeding dogs.
